mother's day weekend

i couldn't have asked for a better weekend to spend with branden and the kids.  he didn't work all weekend and even took them out to brunch on saturday morning while i ran a race and did my church calling.  win-win for all involved.

top memories from the weekend include:

1) on friday, upon seeing some individuals of the islam faith dressed in robes (maybe tourists from the middle east? who knows) hugo turns to me and says 'jesus!' and keeps yelling 'jesus!' while pointing at them while we walked by.  i chuckled while whispering 'yes, i see, thanks hugo.  they aren't jesus. yes, i see them too'.  trying to calm him down enough to get him to stop yelling.  luckily his two-year -old language still sounds like his mouth is full of marbles so i don't think anyone understood what he was saying.  it was a proud moment (and a funny one).

2) dinner at sarabeths' on saturday with the kids.  they were so well behaved and patient and cute.  and sitting inside sarabeths' while it poured rain outside was pretty amazing.  it was a moment where i looked at all of us and thought 'oh. this is real.  we are a little family of four' (because somehow it wasn't real before? who knows where my thoughts come from)

3)  lobster from sarabeths, both at the restaurant and for leftovers on sunday.

4) running in a 10k on saturday morning.  i ran slow but i finished.  and it felt SO good.  i love the feeling of accomplishment that comes from finishing races.

5) watching etta crawl around on our picnic blanket on sunday afternoon picking up crumbs and scraps like a lost dog.  at one point she climbed inside our grocery bag to reach some blueberries that had fallen inside.  i swear we aren't starving her.  she just LOVES food.

6) branden bringing home flowers and getting to arrange them myself.  it's much more satisfying looking at them knowing that i created it.  maybe it's a sign that i am narcissistic?   for now i'll tell myself it's my creative side finding happiness.

7) being happy.  really happy.  this weekend wasn't hard.  it was pleasant. and beautiful. and i felt content.  new york is an amazing place with so many opportunities but sometimes i forget how amazing it is when i'm caught up in how hard i am having to work to get through the day.  subways, stairs, laundry, groceries, day to day living.  while things are ridiculously convenient here-somehow it just don't seem to work out the way i plan (like an outing that is supposed to be 30 minutes away ends up taking hours because the subways stop running when we start home and we are stranded out in queens.  that happened yesterday.)  but this weekend was so perfect and easy.  we walked into the restaurant and were seated immediately.  the park was the perfect temperature for running around. the rain stopped for us to walk home from dinner.  hugo didn't run away in the park (ha! funny kid has no fear).  i don't know if i should call these things blessings-because while they are convenient-i know that heavenly father loves us far more deeply and significantly than silly changes in the weather and subways and elevators not being broken.  but ease of this weekend did allow us to relax together as a family in a way we haven't for a while.  and that was most definitely a significant and important blessing from heaven.

and on a tangential note...
my mother's day gift to myself.  my wedding rings have gotten too big over the years so i figured this would be a sweet little replacement until i figure out what to do with my other rings.
