okay, so this post is sort of a photo dump. but it can't be helped. five pointz and gantry state plaza are a photo mecca. gantry state plaza is right across the river from the city. the gigantic pepsi sign is lefotver from when the area was a bottling plant for pepsi. the neighborhood is up and coming-the apartments are brand new and gorgeous-but there's not much else there. lots of big empty factory buildings. but if you walk a few blocks into queens, you'll find five pointz (well you used to find it-it's since been demolished! a travesty). five pointz was the graffiti mecca of the city. it was abandoned buildings that had been converted into a makeshift graffiti museum. artists could pay $15 to add their own art to anywhere they could get to. it makes for a fun and colorful photo op-plus a great way to talk to the kids about colors. i mean, what could be more fun than learning about colors through vivid and exciting larger than life paintings? first time we went wasn't enough-so we popped in a second time to make sure we saw five pointz one more time before it was demolished (lucky for us-we made it in time. it was painted over and destroyed only 1 day after we went! they are demolishing the buildings to make way for more brand new apartment buildings.)
