the pig finally got close enough that hugo could see it! |
we made a jaunt up to stone barns with friends lane and britton after hearing about
sharon's trip. it's an organic farm where all us city folk can go and remember that people aren't meant to live on top of each other. (remember when i lived in colorado and it was normal to see cows, sheep, and horses? i'm turning city. sometimes i realize that hugo is going to grow up without knowing animals like i did and it makes me sad.)
anyway, some time away from the city was just what we needed. no trains! no cars! no pavement! greenery! animals! open space! somehow, in my head, it seemed like it would be cooler up there. well. i think it might have been cooler. but it was still HOT. steamy hot. it reminded me of the days i rode horses in the heat in my boots and britches, chaps and jeans. how did i do that?

the breed of chickens used for slaughtering |
anyway, if anyone is planning a trip up there, here's what i recommend. bring a picnic (or picnic blanket and get food at the farmer's market) and rent a car (you can do public transport-but it's so lovely up there, you will want to explore a little). plan time for the activities you would like to do at the farm (egg collecting for the kiddos, storytime, farmer's market, tour of the farm) then take off and do a picnic at the nearby lake and park.

oh hey there little guy! |
the trip up there was perfect. we got to see animals! did i say that already? oh well. i really love animals. i think we will try to return when hugo is a little older. this time hugo was just barely interested in the chickens. they were his size and he could get close enough to have them peck at him. and nursing was a little rough in the heat. he actually cried when i wouldn't give him more than a few ounces of my cold bottled water. but he was a champ! and completely konked out on lane's lap on the way home.

egg laying chickens. i was a little afraid they would peck us. |
